Watch Demand in a Slowdown: What the Figures Can—and Cannot—Tell You
A softer market is not a verdict on the watch you love. Read the difference between export values, quantities and the particular example in front of you.

THE FIGURES DESCRIBE A PERIOD. The watch deserves a closer look.
Value and volume need different readings. Neither gives the condition, price or wearing pleasure of the watch being offered to you.
The conversation changes before the watch does
During a difficult trading period, a watch appointment can acquire an unfamiliar vocabulary. Before the case is opened, someone mentions softer demand, a recovery or a buying opportunity. You may hear the same phrase attached to very different objects: a current model, an older example or a whole collection.
The watch in front of you still needs to be understood on its own terms. Its proportions, surface and condition have not been described by a national export number. A change in the conversation may be worth listening to, but it is not a substitute for looking closely at the object and reading the actual offer.
This guide asks how to read a slowdown without turning it into either alarm or reassurance. It uses a defined Swiss export year to show the difference between money values and quantities, then brings the enquiry back to the purchase. It does not diagnose a global recession, identify a market bottom or predict what a watch will be worth later.
Export value
An export-value series measures the value recorded at the stated boundary. Ask how the publisher defines that value before treating it as money spent in boutiques. The point in the commercial journey matters as much as the percentage attached to it.
Quantity
A count of watches answers a different question from their combined value. Keep the count and its change beside the value figure rather than replacing one with the other. Two series can describe the same period without moving by the same proportion.
Retail sales
A claim about purchases by customers needs evidence that actually measures those purchases. Do not borrow an export total because it is available or because the words sales and exports appear close together in a report. Retain the source’s own definition.
A particular offer
A seller quotation concerns an identified example and specified terms. Ask what is included and what is being claimed about its condition. An aggregate downturn does not establish a discount, and an attractive quoted price does not establish future resale proceeds.
One completed year, two different movements
FH’s 2025 annual account reported total Swiss watchmaking exports of CHF 25.6 billion, down 1.7% compared with 2024. Within that account, wristwatch exports were CHF 24.4 billion, also down 1.7%; the number of watches exported fell 4.8% to 14.6 million. The overall category and the wristwatch figures should remain clearly identified.
The contrast between the wristwatch value change and the quantity change is the useful reading exercise. The percentages are not interchangeable. A reader who has kept both series can describe the year more accurately than a reader who repeats a single figure as if it were a complete account of demand.
These figures do not identify the reason for every change. In particular, they do not demonstrate that a global recession caused a given result or that buyers moved into one named collection. The export account is evidence of its stated measurements. A causal explanation, a retail claim and a particular Maison result each require additional evidence.
The example remains a completed 2025 year. FH publishes later monthly information and states that revised publications take precedence. If you need a current result, open the current series rather than describing this historical example as today’s market position.
Retain the reporting period
Write the start and end of the measured period beside the publication date. A full year and a month can tell different stories without either being wrong. Do not remove the dates in order to give a figure the appearance of a lasting market judgement.
Keep value beside quantity
Record the source’s value and count separately where both are available. Preserve their definitions and comparison bases. A compact note with two clearly named series is more informative than a dramatic percentage without an explanation of what changed.
Identify the observation point
Ask where the measurement sits: exported goods, purchases by end customers or transactions involving previously owned watches. FH itself distinguishes exports from end-consumer sales. The series cannot be moved to another stage simply by changing the heading above it.
Keep the Maison out of the aggregate
A Swiss industry result is not an individual brand result. If someone attaches the aggregate figure to a photograph of a famous model, ask for the evidence that connects them. The recognition of the object does not supply that missing connection.
Inspect the actual example
Move from the headline to the reference and offered watch. Ask for condition information, service details where relevant, included items and written terms. Those enquiries are worth making in a busy market as well as a quieter one; they are not replaced by a cycle label.
Leave the future unresolved
A purchase can be satisfying without a promise of appreciation. If an argument depends on an expected recovery or profitable resale, keep that prediction separate from the documented offer. Decide whether the watch and present terms make sense without relying on an outcome not yet observed.
A beautiful space is not a business result
The photographs in this guide show AP House Amsterdam as published in Audemars Piguet’s own location gallery. The seating, light and interior details invite a closer look at the setting in which watches may be discussed. They are a visual case, not a report that TheTimeo visited the location or measured its activity.
That distinction matters in a demand article. A photograph cannot establish the number of appointments, watches sold, returning clients or available references. There is no need to invent those claims to appreciate the room. Describe what is visible and leave the commercial questions to sources that actually answer them.
FH also warns that consolidated Swiss export figures cannot determine an individual firm’s business trend. The location and the statistical example therefore remain separate. Bringing them together makes an editorial discussion tangible; it does not turn them into a measured financial relationship.
01Does an export decline prove a global recession caused it?
No. The cited results describe an export period. They do not isolate that cause or diagnose a global recession, and this guide makes neither claim.
02Does a lower quantity mean my chosen watch is a bargain?
No. An aggregate count cannot establish the price, condition or terms of one offered example. Inspect the watch and compare documented offers that are genuinely comparable.
03Should I buy before demand recovers?
No timing recommendation is made here. A forecast is not an observed result. Consider the present purchase without treating a hoped-for recovery as a guarantee of value.
Make room for an unhurried choice
A quieter market conversation can be an invitation to slow down, not a command to buy. Spend the appointment on the details that drew you to watchmaking: the way a dial holds the light, how the case sits, whether the watch feels familiar or surprising once it is worn.
Ask the practical questions, then allow yourself an answer that is not shaped by someone else’s forecast. You may want the watch enough to proceed; you may prefer to wait for a different example. The aim is a clear present decision rather than a performance prediction dressed as personal taste.
The strongest part of the encounter may be simple: you leave knowing the watch better. That understanding belongs to you whether or not the next market report changes its tone.

Sources & further reading
Sources checked directly on 14 September 2026. The numerical case is FH’s completed 2025 year, published 29 January 2026: overall watchmaking exports, wristwatch export value and wristwatch quantities are identified separately. This is not a current monthly report or evidence that a global recession caused those results. FH definitions and revision policy were checked on its statistics hub. Amsterdam images are the named location’s official own-gallery photographs; no retail performance or Maison-wide financial conclusion is inferred.
